Sometimes, the most unexpected emails lead to the most meaningful connections. In 2023, Ohio Province Director of Associates Barbara Markus received an email from Sister Priscilla Aliu, SNDdeN, the Nigerian Province Director of Associates and Communications. Sister Priscilla was eager to learn more about Ohio Associates' activities. After a few exchanges, she surprised Barbara with a heartfelt invitation: “We want you to be the first speaker at our First National Convention of Associates in Nigeria!”
Barbara didn’t hesitate and sought guidance close to home. Sister Julie Mokidi, SNDdeN, a Nigerian Sister studying theology at Xavier University, lived at Mount Notre Dame. Barbara and Julie teamed up to prepare a 30-minute Zoom presentation for the Nigerian Associates, focusing on self-care, prayer, and stress.
Drawing inspiration from Saint Julie’s writings and scripture, Barbara spoke about the importance of health, prayer, and gratitude. Sister Julie added practical insights, reminding the Associates to cherish their health and sharing advice for navigating today’s challenges. In a poignant moment, Julie recounted a tragic story from Nigeria, encouraging Associates to be vigilant and supportive in their communities.
The session with 35 Nigerian Associates was dynamic and inspiring. What was planned as a half-hour presentation became a lively discussion over an hour. The Associates were eager to learn about the Ohio Province and asked thoughtful questions about how to better support people made poor in their communities.
Reflecting on the experience, Barbara expressed deep gratitude: “Julie was a Godsend!” Together, they built a bridge of connection and shared mission between continents, embodying the spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur: making God’s goodness known everywhere.
Moments like these remind us how far-reaching and profound our global Notre Dame family truly is.
