Just before Lent, the sisters, associates and staffs of the SNDdeN-Ohio Province were
invited to attend a Zoom presentation with Dr. Kimberly Cameron, a trained member of the
speakers bureau from Beyond Plastics. This Zoom presented in simple terms why we must
ban single-use convenience plastics in our world. Dr Cameron spoke about the toxicity of
the many additives in plastic and how they can affect our health. She connected the
production of plastics, now mostly done through ethane cracker plants, to climate
change. If the production of plastic was a country, it would be the 5th largest CO2 emitter in the world.
Action
After the presentation, we shared what the plastic taskforce of the Dorothy Stang Initiative
is inviting all to engage in education on how we personally use plastic and advocacy to change how plastic is used on a societal level. Personal behaviors are important. Changing
systems is critical and difficult. Check out BeyondPlastics.org and stay tuned
