This year's High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) takes place from July 8 to 17, 2024. The focus will be on five specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), each represented by its official icon. The annual Forum provides a vital platform for governments to voluntarily report on their progress toward achieving these goals within their respective countries.
Among the thirty-seven countries participating this year, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SNDdeN) are actively engaged in six: Brazil, DRC, Kenya, Peru, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The unique perspectives and experiences of the Sisters from these nations will significantly contribute to the global and national discourse on the progress and challenges in realizing the SDGs.
In preparation for this critical event, the SNDdeN NGO Office at the United Nations, in collaboration with the Justice Coalition of Religious (JCoR) and its members, undertook a comprehensive seven-month training program. This initiative engaged the Sisters, residents, and ministers from the four countries mentioned above, equipping them with knowledge about the UN, the SDGs, and essential advocacy skills. This training was designed to ensure effective participation and representation at the HLPF alongside other civil society members.
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Sarudza Dominica and Lucyane Riberio Diniz, who completed this rigorous training, will attend the Forum in person. Their presence will allow them to actively participate in numerous events and listen to country reports, offering firsthand insights into the progress and challenges in achieving the SDGs.
The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur's participation in the HLPF underscores the importance of diverse voices in the dialogue on sustainable development. Their involvement enriches the understanding of the SDGs at a national and global level. It highlights the critical role of religious and civil society organizations in advocating for sustainable and equitable development.
As the world gathers to discuss and assess progress on the SDGs, the contributions from these Sisters will serve as a valuable testament to the power of collective action and community engagement in driving sustainable development forward.
