Sister Dorothy Stang honored at Calvary Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio
Posted April 22, 2021
A year after the martyrdom of Sister Dorothy Stang in 2005 in Boa Esperança, Pará, Brazil, the Stang family, during their customary family reunion, dedicated a large stone with a bronze plaque in Dorothy’s memory at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. On this 2021 Earth Day the stone and plaque were relocated to the newly named Sister Dorothy Stang Way. Sister Judi Clemens joined Dot’s sister, Barbara Richardson, and an intergenerational gathering of Stang family members for the dedication. The road is located in the newly opened 90 acres of woodland property where conservation of the natural setting will be preserved. It is a beautiful winding road and the Stang memorial to Dorothy is surrounded by trees, native to the area. The dedication included a prayer service where the Gospel reading of the Beatitudes was proclaimed and both the new Sister Dorothy Stang Way sign and the road were blessed. The Ohio Province Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are grateful to the Administration and Board of Directors of Calvary Cemetery and to the Stang family for this lovely memorial to Sister Dorothy. -- Written by Sister Judi Clemens, SNDdeN
