Sister Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN, will make history today (January 10, 2025) as the first woman from the United States to be honored at the Sanctuary for New Martyrs in Rome's Basilica of St. Bartholomew. Students, teachers, and family members have gathered in Rome, united in carrying forward Sister Dorothy's mission of making known God's goodness through education and care for Earth and its people.
As Dr. Laurie Johnston, Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Emmanuel College in Boston, told WDTN-TV , "Each of the side altars is devoted to a different continent, but this is going to be the first woman from the United States ever to be honored in that sanctuary. The relics include a sweater worn by Sister Dorothy and a cross containing soil from the site where she was killed." May her legacy inspire us to stand courageously where the need is greatest.
