For years, Gina Helms, the Campus Minister at Badin High School, had a vision of organizing an optional overnight retreat exclusively for girls. This retreat would be a blend of inspiration, introspection, camaraderie, and fun.
Recently, the third annual retreat unfolded at the Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center in Indiana, bringing together 31 girls from grades 9 through 12 along with 10 staff members.
One of the highlights was a session led by Sister Kristin Matthes, SNDdeN, focusing on values and intentional living. Kristin, along with Sister Rita Sturwold, SNDdeN and other staff members, facilitated both small and large group discussions.
These sessions provided a platform for everyone to share their personal values, how they incorporate them into their lives, and their aspirations for the future. The retreat also delved into the essence of friendship, with the girls expressing gratitude for their closest companions, discussing the qualities of a good friend and a strong woman, and exploring the significance of female leadership.
Moreover, they tackled the concept of resilience and empowerment, discussing how they confront challenges from a position of inner strength. Throughout the retreat, meaningful conversations blossomed during meals, games, and crafting sessions. The culmination of the event was a poignant closing prayer service centered on the theme "God speaks." Each participant reflected on how they perceived divine communication through a scripture quote they had received, connecting it to the profound impact of the overnight experience tailored exclusively for them. In essence, the retreat provided a nurturing environment where girls could bond, reflect, and grow, reinforcing the importance of female empowerment and solidarity in their journey toward self-discovery and spiritual connection.
