October 2023: Monthly Reflections of God's Goodness

Sister Mary Ann Barnhorn, SNDdeN

We were born into a disordered world! Evil seems to reign at times. What can we do? Who can we believe? When faced with so many things out of our control, we must turn to the real source of the truth. God knows our pain and sadness. He suffers with us over the condition of America. Remember, He promised to be with us.

“And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20b

“So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.” Hebrew 4:16

You are not alone. God, in His goodness, has given us His word as assurance and reassurance of His love and presence with us. He has given himself in the Eucharist so that we can be strengthened. And God has given us the Holy Spirit to guide us from within.

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

You have heard before that we are the hands and feet, voice and presence of God in our world. We are called to be light in the darkness we see around us. Most of all, we are called to prayer.

Pray that your own heart will mirror God’s heart.

Pray for the leaders of our country and future leaders.

Pray for the healing of our country.

Pray for opportunities and boldness to show God’s love.

Pray daily. Create a reminder for yourself, a sign that you can see sometime during your day. And remember these words to the Philippians and to us:

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

As we witness the changing of the season, when summer green turns into brown, orange, and red, remember the Paschal Mystery. Winter follows with its darkness and moody grays, but deep within there is life slowly getting ready to burst into the glory of Spring. That is God’s way. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection brought us to life! God knows how to bring good out of everything!

May you find peace in prayer and joy in His creation.

Blessings,

Mary Ann Barnhorn, SNDdeN
