In recent years we seem to have lost trust in so many ways and in so many things. Who and what can we believe? We have real fears and more questions than answers. Look to Mary. She believed in God’s word. She believed in God’s Son and journeyed with him all the way to the cross. She trusted God’s promises.
Trust is the basis of all close relationships and Mary is the perfect person to learn from. She has been a wise model of how to respond to whatever God is calling us to. Think about her ‘YES’ to the Angel Gabriel. Of course, she had a few questions, as we often do when we hear God’s voice!
From our vantage point, it almost seemed easy for her. Yet Mary’s faith had been shaped by her life as a young Jewish girl, where she heard the Word of God daily in the temple. The melodies and lyrics of the psalms filled her heart,
"For in him our hearts rejoice; in his holy name we trust." Psalm 33:21
Mary grew in knowledge of God, fed by her reflection on his Word and time spent praising and listening to God.
"To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul, my God, in you I trust;" Psalm 25:1-2a
Her heart’s desire was to do God’s will.
Isn’t that what we want too? Don’t we want to respond with our own ‘yes’ to God. So many scriptures speak about trusting God and many spiritual advisors would agree that trusting in God is key to our Christian discipleship.
"Trust in the LORD and do good that you may dwell in the land and live secure. Find your delight in the LORD who will give you your heart’s desire. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will act." Psalm 37:3-5
Follow Mary’s example. Spend time with the Scriptures, meditate on the Psalms, pray for increased trust in God whenever life gets difficult. Prepare yourself to meet every challenge life presents and every call from our loving God.
May the good God grant you the grace to draw closer and closer to God as you spend time with Him and meditate on His Word.
Blessings,
