Coming Home

In July 2024 we introduced a capital project to raise needed funds for improvements to the Notre Dame Health Center.

The Health Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the retirement home for Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and other women religious.

Coming Home will address a list of safety and quality of life needs. These include modernization of the fire alarm system, nurse call system and HVAC components; replacing worn plumbing; upgrading the elevators; and replacing light bulbs with energy efficient LED lighting.

The goal of this two-year campaign is $1.5 million. For details, contact Kevin Manley, director of development, at [email protected] or 513-679-8117.

A quarter-century ago, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur looked to the future and thoughtfully built an 80-room health center to serve its eldest members. Here is where Sisters who have retired after decades in the mission field receive the care and community they deserve.

Today, that facility is showing its age. Just as your home needs constant maintenance, the health center needs modern upgrades to ensure both the safety and the comfort of these women. The list of needs is long: fire systems, heating and cooling systems, elevators, hot water valves and more.

In accomplishing these things, we will keep Mount Notre Dame what it is above all else – a home. Sisters now in their 80s and 90s once walked the grounds together as teenagers, some as students, some as novices. They have ministered here, worshiped here, rested here, taught here, grieved here, laughed here, retired from overseas missions here and grown old here. They have been family to one another all their adult lives and just as family cares for family, so too do they care for one another.

In their elder years, the Sisters don’t have the same options as some other retirees. They don’t have children or grandchildren to assist with their care. They took a vow of poverty, and they don’t own private homes where they might have the means to hire in-home medical services. Instead, they have Mount Notre Dame.

And though the building has become dated and worn, it has remained one of the most respected healthcare facilities in Ohio and is rated deficiency free by the Ohio Department of Health year after year.

After dedicating their lives to others in service of our good God, our Sisters deserve to retire with dignity. The Coming Home project will sustain the Mount Notre Dame Health Center into the future, and will care for the Sisters who are, once again, and with family — home.
